Does the police force really exist to serve and protect?

In the past two weeks 2 of my friends have gotten mugged at gun point on the same street by the same people on 2 different days. A few of our friends live in an apartment complex along the street they were mugged. It was the same van, the same gun, and around the same time during the evening. They reported this to the police and both gave a very descriptive report, but nothing was done about it. Maybe it was because they were two young college students but not one patrol car has been sent there. I understand that they did not get the license plate number but you would think that at least something would be done about this situation. Not only were my friends mugged but others too have been victimized by these same people. Maybe I am being a little dramatic but shouldnt something be done about this?

You are correct, something should be done. The problem is, there is more crime than police. I can only hope they do the best they can. That's the main reason so many people are buying guns to protect themselves. It is really getting scarry!

mIn some instances I have wondered the same thing . It is not all, but in general. I have encountered some policemen who I feel have an hidden agenda and it is not to serve and protect. I honestly believe that when they initially sign up for the job that the intent is to try make a difference, but once the stress of the job starts to take a toll on them, their intentions are hardened.

The only time you have a right to protection is when you are in custody. See Rivera v. City of Providence if you don't believe it.

That is so sad to hear about nothing being done. They could have at least put some patrol cars out there. I'm not really sure about police anymore....

You are right!!. Something should have being done already but the law enforcement, in my opinion is all corrupted. They only act when ever they feel like it. They need to help people when needed not when ever they feel like it.

Yes, definitely!! I cant believe there is doubt out there. There is no question, they are there to serve and protect, my question is, WHO!!!!

I wouldn't say you're being dramatic at all. I've heard of such cases and nothing was done about it. It seems as if they focus on other things, other type of crimes instead of the ones that go on in the community. Now, if what had happened to your friends happened to the police, things would be different. They would do their best to investigate such a thing. I have no idea as to why this persist.

I agree something should be done. But you have to see it like public safety sees it. There are way too many 911 calls for police to handle as it is. One complaint about a mugging on a street isn't going to cause much of an uproar in the PD department. Now it might if it was a small town, with no crime. But in a big city, good chance unless a murder or something like that was committed, it will be overlooked and thrown away.
