Male Influence
I work in an office with 11 other women and all but two of them are in their twenties (including myself). There’s a horrible gossip problem, especially within one clique of girls. All of the gossip creates tension and sometimes feelings are seriously hurt. It makes it very difficult to accomplish much of anything. When I told my mom of the problem, she said that whenever there was a gossip problem in any of the offices she’s worked in the supervisors have intentionally hired a male employee to fill a position within the bull pit. She said it’s always worked to alleviate the gossip. Do you think this could be true? Why would a male influence in an office full of women have such an effect?

One thing I have noticed, where there are women, you will have gossip. I guess a male influence would have a great effect because it takes the attention of the women from each other. I think most women do not want to appear silly to men. And gossip is silly!
I definately agree with pmoten. When a male is around, girls know that he does't want to hear all about their gossip. He finds it annoying and unattractive. In order to please him, they 'tame themselves'.
Why not consider training as an issue.
If they are taught that gossip is the lowest form of conversation, they may think about it.
Lowest form of conversation people.
Middle: experience
Highest: ideas.
I have worked in the corporate world for number of years and now I work for GCPS. I believe that any time you have more than five women, you'll always find gossip. I think it's in our genes. Co-ed working environment does help some, but it will not eliminate it completely.
It's funny that you should post that comment about the lowest form of conversation. When everything started to escalate, a friend gave me this quote, "Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and small minds discuss people."-Phil Spector
It has since become one of my favorites.
