Barack or Hillary: Who Should Black Women Vote For?

A friend and I were comparing the similarities and differences in views of, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton, one day at work. A customer walks up and joins in, and we have a pretty decent conversation until the customer, who is a Caucasian male, says,"You guys are really going to have a hard time trying to decide who you are going to give your vote, with, Barack Obama, being African American, and Hillary Clinton ,being a woman?" (The friend and I are African American, by the way.) I don't know what his intentions were, nor will I assume, but we were, definitely, not amused. I understand that this is history in the making. I do, however, think that the decision will be difficult, but not for those reasons. Why should it matter about race/gender? Shouldn't the focus be on who is the better candidate? I don't know, maybe my priorities are off.

I don't know, when women and blacks have been under-represented for so long . . . I understand his remark. And it's interesting that women and blacks can make such a powerful statement on election day.

White men no longer have the majority voting block. I, for one, would like to see the difference it makes for individual white males when they aren't the only ones who can dream of being President. I know if (I really mean when) Clinton or O'Bamma wins, women and blacks will dream different dreams.

I totally agree that the main focus should be on who the best candidate is and color, nor race have anything to do with it. I also think that dc makes a great point about the "future dreams" comment.

It all comes down to whom you believe is best equipped to assume presidency. So, on that note, your priorities are not off.

Do you ever wonder how many people will vote for Hillary just because she is a female and how many will vote for Obama because he is black? It is definately scary to even think about it. I wonder how that male, white person that spoke to you will vote.

I absolutely agree with you that the priority should not be on color and gender, but rather who would be the best candidate in a time when the country is at war and people are concerned about economy.

I was wondering the same thing, and, yes, that is very scary. This is a whole other issue.

I have to say that I too wonder who most people will vote for will it be Hillary just because she a women and the former president wife and we all know she really ranned the white house for him or will it be Obamma because he is black. I think the world is ready for a change weather it a women or a black man it will definetly be a change that's for sure.

I agree with you Shavone, the focus should be on who the better candidate is. I think the problem with this election is, it's hard to identify the better candidate!

i agree that the focus shouldn't be about them being black or a woman. put i think many people that don't understand their platforms will place their vote on that basis. which is kind of sad.

The main focus should be on the better canidate. If either is elected it would be a historical event. A woman president. A African American president. I am in the same ordeal. I am a African American woman. Do I vote for the women or do I vote for the African American. I have put their gender and race aside and focused on the facts. Who will do a better job in office for me and our country.

Exactly. Some will not think about that aspect and push for whom they would rather see in office, instead of the most qualified. I like the views of both candidates, however, should we be concerned about, Obama's, lack of experience or, Clinton's, over-confidence.

I absolutly agree that the main focus should be on who will be the best candidate to move this country forward in everyway and for everyone, not just for Women or men, Blacks or whites. We all say this because it is the right thing to say, but deep in us we want to vote for that person we can relate to that will understand us. I am not saying that African American women should vote for Clinton only because she is a women or for O'Bamma only because he is black.the reality is that is going to happen no matter what we say.I will be very happy if eather one wins because that will change history. The first female president or the first black president is fine with me, as long the Republicans don't win again.

I definitely agree with you, that only shows how ignorant some people are.
