Military AWOL

A friend of mine introduced me to a site for VICE. In it there are articles, news topics, and anything you can think of posted in a quirky sort of way. I met Rob walking out of class the other week and he had mentioned being in the military so I wanted to post this article I read on http://www.viceland.com/. Click on the post title, "Military AWOL", and it will take you to the article and at the very bottom of the page there are comments from readers.

My personal view is that he isn't perfect, but he shouldn't have gone into the military without thinking he might have to face combat overseas. What do you think?

I've only gotten part through the article and class is starting. My main observation so far:

He seems very whiny. The part where he discusses being stationed at Ft Gordon and being forced to do meanial labor is a part of the training process.

It would be similar to a foreign college student coming here and complaining that all Americans do is write essays.

When people don't give proper context to their writing it makes me suspicious and begin generally disliking the writer.

After reading the article I have to agree with both your observations. I think he was really just looking for an easy way to pay for his education without considering he might have to actually fight in a war to get the money. Things changed and when they did he ran. The choice was not as easy as he thought it would be.
