There's a last seat on the bus, and i'm next to it, people of different colour pass me by, and avoid it like the plague. I check myself to see what the problem could be, Am I dressed too shabbily in my shirt and tie, commit a horrible fashion faux pas or is my cologne offensive to the olfactory senses? I ponder the answers to these questions as i stop by the grocery store. Walking in I greet the blue skinned shopkeeper with a hearty smile, he wrinkles his nose and looks away. Once again I find myself pondering my cologne's scent. I locate my magazine and return to pay for it. I take out my credit card but it's refused by the shopkeeper. Puzzled, I inquire about his refusal and he says he doesn't do credit cards. Cursing my luck, i make for the exit, and as I take one last glance at the magazine that got away, I see the next customer, blue in colour paying with her credit card! Now I pose this question to all who have read my tale, Is Racism Alive Or Dead?

Its unfortunate that things like that still happen and you had to go through that type of treatment. It seems that racism is all but dead. Some people still haven't grown up and realized that instead of the people with different skin color being shunned, its people like them that should be. But pay no attention to those people because theres more people on your side then theirs.
I feel that the way the man treated you was so unfair but yes it do happen and yes it is still alive today. I however do agree with Kim there are more of us on your side but there are alot of people who are rasicm and are raising there kids to be the same way. Which is very sad.
I am sorry that you had to face such an experience. I can absolutely say that racism is still alive. When I go shopping with my Indian friend, she is always treated in a different manner than I am. It is extremely fustrating to me to see such a thing as I am of foreign decent, but people can't quite decide if my accent sound like a Californian or Arizona. Maybe I'm too sensitive to this, because I am from Hungary. I do agree with Kim that there are more people who are on your side then theirs.
Humans are pack animals and racism is a group phenomenon. It is just easy to be part of a pack and eaiser if you feel threatened by another pack. Individulals culled from the pack make a choice not to participate in racism.
Unless all mankind has a common goal we will continue as packs.
Only a catastrophic event that threatens us as an entire species will force us into a human race.
Racism will never go away. All we can do is continue building a pack stronger than the racists.
I completely agree with kelly, and everyone for that matter. Racism is an ongoing issue for the human race. I really think that we do not share a common goal with our fellow man and that is ultimately what divides the masses, apart from total ignorance.
I find it so sad that with all that we have accomplished and overcome and with everything we have at stake, that there are still people who would treat you in such a way.
Wow. It's ashamed that things like that keep happening in 2008. You would think that racism dissapear but trust me still there. We just have to stand tall and keep fighting back. We can't give up because that's what they want us to do. Stay strong!!!
Racism is just an escape from a person not wanting to be a affiliated with something new. The majority of this country is white so it is a noticeable difference in the way the majority treats their own and minorities. Point to ponder, I did not ask to be in the US but I am here so let us start treating each other and get some results so this nation can move foward. I would call racism another form of gang affiliation because they say if you dont look like me I am going to treat you differently. Racism is Alive and well..

....racism is obviously still alive, and as harsh as it might sound, if you really think about it... it will always be there there's no way you can really make it go, if there wasn't any, then there wouldnt be any egocentric people or ethnocentric or however you spell it... and without that there's no conflict...if there's no conflict how do we make peace?
i think it sounds a bit retarded, but my main point is that there is no real solution to such problem out there... you might be able to change minds in big quantities...but you can't change the entire world, i personally have been through at least 100000000000000 cases like those, and the first half million cases would really make me even cry.... but after all that i'm used to it. So yeah, i think it's pretty alive
Racism is alive and I'm not sure that we can ever stop it. Tests have been done on babies that indicate that they have racist perceptions.
One of the biggest problems is self-deception. Most people would be ashamed if they realized knew how racist they really are.
Instead of automatically denying one's deeply held beliefs or views I feel that it's better for each of us to look deeply within our words and actions and try to be as critical as possible.
While I doubt that racism will ever die, I hae hope that each of us can grow to a point that we accept who we were, who we are and who we can be with effort.
My students who meet at Dunwoody for class read Mya Angelou's essay "Sister Flowers" last night.
I remember how she explained how she deals with prejudice: She tells the person, "Not in my presence."
So if someone is verbally putting down any race or gender, tell that person, "Not in my presence."
I even turned to two guys smoking next to the tennis court on Sunday: Not in my presence.
Everyone actually knows better. You would never go into someone's home and light up (unless maybe there were ashtrays in every room. Hopefully, you'll join us there, too: Not in my presence.
I love Kelly's comment that this pack has to become stronger than the one that is not kind, or sophisticated, or intelligent.
Theres no doubt about it, it is alive and I'm afraid it will never die. Unfortunately it still goes on today in our society. Although a few things have changed, a lot still stayed the same. I wonder WHY this stil goes on. But like I stated beore it still goes on and I'm afraid it will never die.
I would say that racism is still alive. It occurs to someone everyday. Its sad that still in this day and age it occurs but I think that it's an issue that we as people will struggle with to the very end of time.
