Gas Prices

Gas is steadily going up and up. Why? Some say it is the war. If it is indeed the war, why are gas company's profits so high? Do you think that the price of gas will ever go down? Since gas has gone up, so has food because trucks need gas to deliver food. If the prices don't go down I won't be able to buy either. I think that if the cost of living is steadily rising so should wages. What do you think?

I agree 100%. The way the prices are rising we can hardly make ends meet. It seems the rich get richer and we barely survive!

I agree with you 100 %. It seems awfully strange that the gas companies are suddenly having record profits. We can't really whine though, as in Europe the gas prices are roughly the equivalent of $8.00/gallon.

You can't blame war for the gas prices. You have to blame inflation. I mean think about it, 20 years ago you could buy a gallon of gas for a nickel, but you could also buy a candy bar and a coke for a nickel. Now gas is 3 dollars and a candy bar and coke is 3. If you step back and look at everything, all prices have gone up, and not all are just based on fuel prices. Don't get me wrong, I don't like paying high prices either, but its not just on gas.

Yeah you are right. Everything now-a-days are getting expensive. Food, clothes, utilities, rent, entertainment. It is getting too expensive to do anything but sit in the house.

Inflation, huh. And this is why eggs are 2 and 2+ dollars. Eggs. WOW. Alright, now I have digressed.

Gas was not a nickel a gallon twenty years ago. More than 30years ago The Oil Producing and Exporting Countries restricted oil supplies causing an economic recession. Lines at filling stations were miles long. Daylight Saving Time was initiated to reduce fuel(fuel oil, electricity) usage in the evening. The speed limit was reduced to 55MPH to save gasoline. Only the Great Depression was worse economically.
There was outrage. "We need alternate fuel sources. We need to reduce our dependance on foreign oil". Sound familiar?
Oil profits are paid to investors, stockholders and a little to merchants, but most of the profits are realized at the well head(Saudia Arabia eg). With a break even point of about $70 per barrel there is plenty of room to spend on eliminating environmental impact and still have enough profit to allow for oil production in the U.S. to resume. This allows the majority of the profits to be put back into our economy, creating wealth used to afford the oil of which we would have control of the cost.
Alternately, we could move toward bio-deisel fuel. The Europeans run on it almost exclusively. It is clean burning and has the efficiency of gasoline that ethanol does not. This requires Detroit to re-tool and produce engines that use diesel and the public has to vote with their pocketbook fot that to happen.
Also, we could reduce the imbedded taxes paid on gaoline. They are nearly 50 cents on the dollar. This would relate to the Fair Tax post on this blog.
Perhaps we could wait 30 more years and then clamor, "We need alternate energy sources. We need to reduce our dependance on foreign oil."

It is so hard for us students to make ends meet with gas prices increasing every day. Me driving to work and school is the only two places i go now. i tried not to go out often. I think it will be a good idea for us students to car-pool to save money on gas. You never know, some of us might live in the same area and have the same class.

If you live in or near, I mean really near, a metropolitan or downtown area, you will probably not have access to mass transit. We need to ride-share to cut back on the need for foreign-oil.

Many things are to blame for the rise in gas prices. Alternatives are in the works, but what does that do to alleviate the lower working class? I certainly can't afford to buy one of the newer electric cars and from my home, I have to drive just as far to reach any form of public transportation.

I also had no idea that prices were so high in Europe detti! Wow!

This is very true. It's crazy how gas is going up. You can only question how high they will go. I just hope it doesn't go to a price we can't afford.

I agree that the prices of gas are getting so high. But the worse is still to come.If things continue like this, believe me,in five months it will be hell. The economy is getting worse as days elapse!
America is consumes about close to 1/3 of the world's energy. This is real bad news for the Americans.Hope things change soonest!!
