The Presidential Election

I found this statement from Democratic Senator, John Edwards, on his website at http://www.johnedwards.com/issues/iraq/: "We don't need debate; we don't need non-binding resolutions; we need to end this war. In order to get the Iraqi people to take responsibility for their country, we must show them that we are serious about leaving, and the best way to do that is to actually start leaving." -- John EdwardsHe proposes to complete this effort within a ten month timeframe. What are your thoughts on taking this action and do you believe the Iraqi people are capable of taking on this responsibility within the timeframe he proposes?

I think that there is so much American wealth invested in the war no one has the power to just say "Its over".

I love to talk politics.

There are folks here without Ins or under-insured; there are children going to bed hungry, and we're spending how much money on the wars?

And yes John McCain said something this weekend about there will be WARS. What he does won't affect him. Sorry John. You're too old to be President.

anitac- I don't believe that a past investment justifies a continued disaster.

My opinion this although I am not an expert (nor could be one with our media's heavily biased news coverage) is that America should minimize it's role in Iraq at a quick pace while trying to integrate Iraq with other countries. Globalizing Iraq would theoretically be a more stable position for them rather than depending on the US and our withering list of allied nations.

The next president should work on some of the problems we have in America like unemployment, price of gas, and developing relations with other nations to minimize the friction between the US and foreign countries.

I'm not a political person but I do believe that 10 months is to short a time to evacuate all of the US troops stationed over seas. Even though the US has been talking about leaving for a while now to just leave could make Iraq very unstable and the government will go back to how it was from the start and the US will have to go back in and start over. But thats just what I think and I'm not trying to say that we should stay there forever, we should leave asap but 10 months just isnt enough time for things to get stable enough for them to govern themselves without outside help. And if the government fails there will be more hostility towards the US for going in to help and then just abandoning them to fend for themselves will make the US look like we got tired of helping so we left.

You all have made valid points which I can agree with to an extent. I also feel 10 months is not enough time for a full scale withdrawal of US troops. I wonder, how did the Iraqi leadership handle war before we interceded? My major concern is that, if they pull out US troops, will it bring the war to American soil. What are your thoughts?

I believe the war is already on American soil. We have become more divided as Americans since the war began.

Shavone has a good point, US leadership is so divided it's amazing we survived this long. Just imagine what the terrorist and other countries are thinking about the US. Do they think we are an easy target because of our division?

I think that it not really realistic. Yes, we need to end the war but the people there need us as well. I think we should end the war and create a miliary base there. That way we are there if needed. We are wasting so much money and are economy is suffering. We need that money to help american. Enough is enough.

That's a good suggestion Charae. If we were withdraw most of the troops, and establish a military base there, what can we do to prepare the people to lead the country? Are they really capable? May not! Sometimes I wonder, if they were, why are we there? What are your thoughts?
